ACCOMMODATIONS & LAYOUT:

The interior is well crafted in teak and finished in a combination of gloss varnish and white bulkhead areas. Although KIVA was built as a race boat, the interior is nicely detailed for comfortable cruising, with no compromise to amenities. Headroom is 6’3" in the salon and 6’+ in all other areas. She sleeps a total of 10 in three cabins.

Starting forward, the FOREPEAK AREA has two well cushioned pipe berths and stowage for the yacht’s equipment, including sails, running rigging, fenders, etc. The area has an extremely large hatch that readily facilitates loading sails as well as bicycles, windsurfers and other cruising toys. Next aft, still forward of the mast is a UTILITY AREA, with wet locker to starboard and tool/equipment storage to port. The MAIN SALON has transom and pilot berths on each side, with a central dining table that can accommodate 6-8. Next aft to port, behind the forward cockpit companionway, is the GALLEY with a Seafrost engine-driven refrigerator/freezer, gimbaled Dickinson stainless steel propane stove with broiler and oven, deep stainless steel sink with sea water and hot & cold fresh water, plenty of counter space and well detailed cabinets – including a wine rack. The NAVIGATION STATION is to starboard of the galley. The navigation station has a full navigation desk with bench seat, all electronics and good stowage for charts, books and tools. The HEAD is next aft to starboard, with hot & cold shower, SS sink, Wilcox-Crittendon "Skipper" head and good stowage. The OWNER’S STATEROOM is aft the galley and head with a queen size berth to starboard, a single berth to port, and a removable pipe berth above the port berth. The stateroom has good stowage with a bureau, hanging locker, and additional cabinets. The stateroom has a privacy companionway to the aft cockpit.

RIGGING:

KIVA has a tall three-spreader sloop rig with Navtec solid rod rigging. She has Navtec hydraulics for adjusting the backstay, boomvang, baby stay and flattening reef. The headstay has dual track Harken furling. A removable inner forestay has been added to the rig. The backstay is insulated for SSB antenna. KIVA has complete spinnaker gear.

SAILS:

MECHANICAL EQUIPMENT AND ENGINE DETAILS:

1991 Yanmar 55hp Turbo FWC marine diesel and Hurth transmission with a 2.5:1 reduction gear. The 35-gallon aluminum fuel tank was new in 1992. The engine charges the electrical system, cools the Seafrost refrigerator/freezer, and heats the hot water. The water heater also has an AC element.

OTHER FEATURES:

REMARKS:

After a successful career as an IOR racing yacht named TABASCO, she was modified for single/short-handed racing. Modifications included adding the keel bulb, furling headstay, autopilot and other short-handed features.  Later renamed KIVA, she has been very successful as a short-handed racer too.  She was first in class for both legs of the Bermuda 1-2 race finishing second overall in the single-handed leg and first overall on the double-handed return leg.  KIVA was built as a high tech race boat in 1982, about the end of the era when racing yachts could be built with extremely comfortable interiors.  Consequently, KIVA has a very workable layout, executed in yacht tradition teak.

KIVA is equally well suited to IMS or PHRF racing at club levels, short or single-handed offshore racing, and family cruising.

KIVA is a fast, spirited, stable, responsive boat that is a joy to experience on all points of sail.
